Yellow and blue make green. More yellow gives a bright, light green; more blue gives a deep one. For natural greens like sage or olive, tone it down with a touch of red, its opposite color.
yellow + blue
Start with yellow and add blue little by little: blue takes over fast. More yellow gives a bright green, more blue a deep one.
green + yellow + white
Yellow for a bright green, white for a pastel green; both together for a fresh, soft green.
green + plenty of white + a touch of red
Green, plenty of white, and a touch of red, its opposite color, to grey it down: that is what gives sage its soft look.
green + yellow + a touch of red
A yellowish green, toned down with a touch of red or brown.
green + a little blue + a touch of red
A little blue to darken it, a touch of red to deepen it without turning it black.
Depending on your supplies
With pencils, you don’t mix: you layer. Lay down the lightest shade in light strokes, then the darker one on top, without pressing. To lighten green, finish with a white pencil; to darken it, add a touch of grey or of its opposite color.
Water-based markers don’t blend well: pick the right shade straight away. With alcohol markers, go over a darker shade with a lighter one while it is still wet to soften the transition.
Mix on the palette, not on the paper. For a lighter shade, add water rather than white: the white of the paper does the lightening.
Acrylic or gouache: always add the dark color to the light one, a little at a time. Write down the amounts so you can find your shade again.
